Cause expressions in Latin

Possible means for encoding the Semantic Role Cause in Latin include NP's in the ablative and various types of PP's. In my paper I will examine the distribution of different types of Cause expression, in connection with a number of other variables, i.e. in controlled/uncontrolled States of Affairs, with verbs of emotion, with active/passive voice, with concrete/abstract nouns, etc. The paper will contain a preliminary discussion of semantic features relevant for Cause, and will be based on a corpus of prose writers from the 1st century BCE. I will also analyze the meaning of prepositions occurring in Cause expressions and the possible metaphors that underlie semantic extention from concrete spatial meaning to Cause.
