Semantic functions within a contrastive grammar of Latin and German
In memoriam Eugenio Coseriu
In this paper, I would like to deal with theoretical problems of defining and distinguishing semantic "roles" or "functions" (such as Agent, Goal, Recipient etc.). More particularly, I would like to compare attempts in Generative Grammar (e.g. R. Jackendoff 1990) and Functional grammar (e.g. S.C. Dik 1997) to establish an empirically adequate and exhaustive typology of semantic functions. Then I will discuss Coseriu's criticism of these attempts. Coseriu (1987: 188ff.) especially criticizes the insufficient distinction between language-specific and extra-linguistic functions. Furthermore, the results of this comparison of differing approaches will be applied to a contrastive description of a selection of Latin and German examples, both at the word group level and at the clause/sentence level.
